A small sample of some of the covers that I had the opportunity to work on. Each section had it’s own unique style and requirements and Editor. After news conference, the section editor and I would discus ideas for the cover and cover story and talk through my idea for the brief. This all had to be decided upon within an hour of the conference. I had 3 hours to come up with a design, get it approved by the section editor, and then finish it off in time for the sub-editors to proof read copy and make any final changes needed by the Editor. This daily pressure made me a better designer as I didn’t have time to come up with multiple ideas or proofs. It trained me to go with my instinct on what was the best design solution - and explore that.
